Potato cultivation area in Pakistan expands 160% over a decade

ISLAMABAD, April 1 (Wealth Pakistan): Pakistan has significantly increased the land used for potato cultivation over the last decade. The area grew from about 177,700 hectares in 2015-16 to around 462,160 hectares in 2025-26, showing an increase of nearly 160 percent.

According to official documents available with Wealth Pakistan, potato farming has expanded rapidly. Farmers have responded to rising demand, adopted improved practices, and used high-yielding seed varieties. As a result, potato has strengthened its position as a key food crop after wheat, rice, and maize.

Production records strong growth

Potato production has also risen sharply during this period. Output increased from 3.8 million tons to nearly 12.0 million tons, reflecting a growth of about 216 percent.

In the current season, farmers planted the crop on nearly 0.462 million hectares. This marks a 23 percent increase from 0.386 million hectares last year. Consequently, total production for 2025-26 is expected to exceed 12 million tons.

This projected output is higher than the previous average of 8-10 million tons. As a result, the country may see a surplus of nearly four million metric tons.

Policy response to manage surplus

The strong growth highlights the sector’s rising potential. However, the supply surplus and limited export options have created pressure on farm incomes and caused a temporary price imbalance.

In response, the government has taken coordinated steps to stabilise the market and support growers. A high-level committee formed by the prime minister has already held several meetings to address export bottlenecks and improve market access.

Authorities are considering key measures such as easing visa processes for drivers on major trade routes and removing logistical barriers to international markets.

At the same time, officials are working to manage surplus stocks through subsidised storage facilities. Exporters and stakeholders are also preparing proposals to reduce freight costs and improve competitiveness.

Exploring new export markets

Encouragingly, Pakistan is exploring new export destinations, especially in the Central Asian Republics. Diplomatic efforts are underway to promote potato exports and tap into emerging markets.
